Since October last year, the Shell Petroleum Development Company has being undertaking Free Medical Outreaches in Oil bearing Communities in the Niger-Delta. And it has being RIVCHO’s delight to partner with the multinational during these exercises providing HIV Counseling & Testing. The team has been well received everywhere and the results out-standing.

In August 2009, the team was at Egbo-Urhie Ughelli South LGA where nine persons tested positive. That same month, the team visited Uzere Isoko South LGA and one person tested positive. In October 2009, the team was at Okpare Ughelli South LGA with two positive. One out of the 43 tested in in Ekakpamre in January 2010 was positive while five out of the 199 tested at Anieze Ndokwa East LGA in February 2010 tested positive. In April 2010 at Oben in Edo State none of the 30 tested was positive while three of the 67 tested in Omadino Warri South LGA in April were positive.

While the crowd scrambling for free medical care are encouraged to know their HIV status, RIVCHO insists on the tests being voluntary and those who present themselves for testing are usually counseled before and after. Those who tested positive are thereafter linked up with the SPDC NIDAR (Niger-Delta Aids Response) program that is stationed at Erhioke Cottage Hospital Kokori Delta State and Oben Cottage Hospital Oben Edo State and other sites for further help and ART
