Richard is the only child of his father, Orode William who died in a motor-cycle (okada) accident in June 2001. After this incident, Richard who was barely three years old and his mother Joy moved into his maternal grand mother’s house where he grew up. His mother became a concubine to one Charles with whom she has had other children. Mainwhile the
mother had had children with another man before Richard’s father.
Richard William has lived on the streets of Ovwian since February 2010 (ie for 17 months). The immediate cause was that he was asked to wash dishes after eating and he didn’t. For fear that the mother and elder sister will beat life out of him, he fled. But before then, he had been stealing often which makes the mother and elder sister punish him a lot. This is the reason Richard William went into the streets and got mixed up with other kids who are living dangerously.
In August 2011 when RIVCHO field officers met him playing with other street children, Richard responded positively to RIVCHO’s friendship overtures, while the others fled
After some period of counselling RIVCHO took Richard home and confirmed his story to be true, RIVCHO pleaded with his mother and elder sister for him to be forgiven. The mother was grateful for the interest RIVCHO had for her child and neighbors were pleased but wondered if child could humbly live life with his mother and avoid the street life which he was now used to.
RIVCHO field officers promised to work with the mother to make a good boy out of Richard. Good enough since Richard came back home he has continued staying with his mother and elder sister and living a normal life like every other child with parents.
Richard William has gone back to school (Ovwian Primary School) with assistance from his late father’s brotheruncle) and RIVCHO/CUBS. He is in Primary 4 and RIVCHO monitors to ensure he is in school and does school work. His friends on the streets are coming to visit him and RIVCHO field officers are trying to also win friendship with them as well as ennsure that they do not influence Richard to go back and start living on the streets again.
After the recent youths/kids club meeting held at Ovwian community town hall, Richard said he aspires to be an engineer. He had participated in the “goal setting” session of Life Skills that held in same venue 25th August 2011.
